中国是茶的故乡，中国人有饮茶的历史，也是茶文化的发祥地。俄罗斯人饮茶始于１７世纪，茶经中国传入俄罗斯虽然仅仅３００年，但已成为俄罗斯人生活中不可或缺的生活用品，并受到俄罗斯文化的熏陶和培育，已然成为独特的俄罗斯茶文化。

俄罗斯饮茶的记载始于１５６７年，先受到上层贵族的宠爱，１７世纪后期迅速普及到各个阶层。到１９世纪，茶仪、茶礼、茶会、茶俗在俄罗斯文学作品中不断出现，茶字成了某些事物的代名词，连给小费也叫“给茶钱”。据一些史书和百科全书的记载，１６３８年俄罗斯人第一次接触茶。茶是在俄罗斯最受欢迎的饮品之一。当时，作为友好使者的俄国贵族瓦西里·斯塔尔可夫遵沙皇之命赠送给蒙古可汗一些紫貉皮，蒙古可汗回赠的礼品便是４普特（约６４公斤）的茶。品尝之后，沙皇即喜欢上了这种饮品，从此茶便堂而皇之地登上皇宫宝殿，随后进入贵族家庭。１６７９年清朝康熙皇帝在位，中俄两国签订了关于俄国从中国长期进口茶叶的协定。由于从中国进口茶叶，路途遥远，运输困难，数量也有限，因此，茶在１７、１８世纪的俄罗斯成了典型的“城市奢侈饮品”，其饮用者的范围局限在上层社会，喝茶则一度成了身份和财富的象征。直到１８世纪末，茶叶市场才由莫斯科扩大到少数外省地区，到１９世纪初饮茶之风在俄国各阶层始盛行。
